VW wants to be the first with an electric station wagon on the market.

One body style that Tesla has steered away from is that of a station wagon (remember those?), even though it had a chance to field one with designing the Model Y. That’s the segment that Volkswagen seems to be aiming for with the upcoming debut of the ID Space Vizzion concept, which is headed to the LA Auto Show in just a few days. But it’s not just headed to the auto show — Volkswagen will put it into production.
“The ID Space Vizzion is a concept for the future but is not a dream,” the automaker said. “The production version will be released in late 2021 and will come in different versions for North America, Europe and China.”
Of course, Volkswagen is still skittish of the word “wagon,” lest it invites flashbacks to the 1980s, so it’s calling the concept a crossover. But we can all see that it’s really a wagon. And if these teaser images are any indication, it looks like it’s going to be pretty attractive.
Is VW planning to field this model because it knows that Tesla can only produce sedans of different degrees of bulbousness?
That seems like part of the answer: Tesla gave the Model X crossover a sedan-like profile, and it gave the Model Y crossover a sedan-like profile, shunning the longroof body style like it’s radioactive.
But Wolfsburg, with plans for a dizzying variety of models on its electric MEB platform, can afford to field a car in every segment, including segments seemingly abandoned by other automakers.
“So far, with our ID family, we have shown what is possible with electric vehicles in each known car category,” said Klaus Bischoff, head of Wolfsburg’s design division. “With the ID Space Vizzion, we create a new, fully electric segment.”
An electric wagon segment would technically be new, simply because no EV has been built in the wagon body style, and we have a feeling there are EV owners out there who would prefer this to a taller crossover or a sedan, both of which account for a big chunk of the body styles in which EVs are offered today.

The 2019 Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion concept will have the bodystyle of a large wagon, even thought VW calls it a crossover.

The range? Volkswagen says that this concept has an EPA-rated range of 300 miles, which sounds like a long-range variant of the ID.4 crossover that will be the first to land stateside next year. The ID.4 is expected to have an 83-kWh battery with two electric motors, one for each axle, with a quoted range of the concept pegged at 311 miles in the European cycle. That sounds pretty close to the setup that Volkswagen has hinted at with the Space Vizzion concept, and it’s not hard to imagine a different body style sitting on the ID.4’s chassis, perhaps with a slightly longer wheelbase.
And it will even have a vegan interior (yes, really!), which sounds like VW knows that EV buyers who will consider a wagon tend to shop at Whole Foods.
“Inside, the concept defines a completely new paradigm of intuitive usability with its completely digitized cockpit,” the automaker said. “The materials are consistently made from sustainable raw materials, such as the new AppleSkin—a vegan alternative to leather.”
We’ll see the ID Space Vizzion concept in LA at the end of the month — and will be on a vegan diet until that time to prepare ourselves for this wagon.
