Laguna Seca’s new management team issued a controversial statement about racing’s viability for wives and kids.

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is under new management following a 62-year stint being run by SCRAMP—the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula.
And there’s already trouble brewing after a controversial statement from said new management.
The Monterey County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 on Monday to give the contract to A&D Narigi Consulting LLC, a management group led by John Narigi, a notable local businessman who previously operated the Monterey Plaza Hotel.
“I am honored that the board of supervisors feel that supportive of me. I believe I have the expertise and definitely have the interests of community and Laguna Seca recreational area,” said Narigi in a statement.
But Narigi has immediately drawn the ire of the racing community and beyond for what else he said—a sexist statement made, apparently, in an effort to promise to diversify the venue’s entertainment offerings.
“There are those that come for the race, but a lot of activities nowadays are for families—and you have to have some type of activities that the mother or the wife will enjoy, kids will enjoy, and right now that is not offered at Laguna Seca,” Narigi added.
IMSA—which, along with IndyCar, races at the track next year—had no comment. We have followed up with A&D and IndyCar, also, and will report back if they have anything to say.
