Lewis Hamilton, left, and Toto Wolff brought home a Formula 1 championship for Mercedes this past weekend in Austin, Texas.

Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff says Mercedes could manage if Lewis Hamilton decided to switch to Ferrari.Negotiations on a contract extension beyond 2020 between Mercedes and six-time Formula 1 champion Hamilton are expected to begin soon, and both Hamilton and Wolff have indicated they want to stick together. However, it’s not out of the question that Hamilton could end up on the open market, as top drivers may be able to capitalize on budget cap rules for 2021. Driver salaries are not included in the cap, which could lead to a bidding war for top driver talent.
Could such a market have Hamilton eyeing Ferrari red in 2021?

“It’s natural that drivers always dream of Ferrari, the most important brand in Formula 1,” Wolff told media outlet Sky Italia. “Red is like the sun in Formula 1.”Asked if Hamilton needs to chase that sun, Wolff answered: “He does not need it. He needs to win. He needs to be with a team and with people who love to work. And his emotion and heart are definitely with Mercedes today.”Wolff did not discount a scenario in which Hamilton, 34, would pursue Ferrari for 2021.”We hope to have the two most competitive drivers in Formula 1,” Wolff said. “And (Hamilton) is our priority today. But if he wants to have a look at the market, we have to as well. And there are others that I like.”
