After showing the concept at the 2019 Detroit auto show and the prototype in July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Lexus is finally showing the production LC500 convertible.
On sale next summer, the LC500 convertible retains most of the coupe’s specs: The 5.0-liter V8 produces 471 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Most changes are to the structure, where the goal was to keep the coupe’s rigidity and handling dynamics as close to the coupe’s as possible without too big of a weight increase. Engineers added various structural braces, and tuned the suspension to deal with the weight difference. The convertible weighs a couple hundred pounds more than the coupe in preliminary specs.

The Lexus LC500 convertible interior is mostly carryover, though engineers added some enhanced features to keep you warm or cool.

The LC500’s top opens in about 15 seconds at vehicle speeds of up to 31 mph and is stowed beneath a tonneau cover. The top itself is made up of four layers of material, so it should keep the cabin quiet when it’s up, and Lexus says the top’s design is meant to keep the coupe’s flowing roofline without seeing the supporting frame through the fabric. To that end, Lexus says the roof material was chosen for optimal tension to minimize wrinkles and improve sound insulation.
Lexus also says it designed the heating and air-conditioning system to adjust the temperature automatically with the top up or down, along with neck heaters to help keep the upper body warm in colder temps.
Pricing for the LC500 convertible hasn’t been announced though surely it’s going to be north of the LC coupe’s $93,975 base sticker. Throw in destination and taxes and we’re likely looking at $100,000 and then some.
