Combs was attempting to break a land speed record in the desert in Oregon.

Noted fabricator, racer and television host Jessi Combs died this August in a crash while attempting to break a land speed record in the car you see above. Local authorities investigating the cause have concluded a mechanical failure occurred, leading to Combs’ death.
According to a statement given to USA Today from the Harney County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon, the cause of the crash is a wheel failure. The statement reads: “Based on the evidence collected and examined at the scene of the crash and the evidence recovered by the North American Racing Team it appears that there was a mechanical failure of the front wheel, most likely caused from striking an object on the desert.”

The statement continues, “The front wheel failure led to the front wheel assembly collapsing. The front wheel failure occurred at speeds approaching 550 miles per hour.”
The investigation also determined that Combs’ cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, which occurred before the race car was engulfed in fire.
Combs will be missed but will live on through her long legacy of work.
